Love Me (Bee Gees song)
"Love Me" is a Barry and Robin Gibb composition which was an international hit in 1976-77 for Yvonne Elliman.
"Love Me" was originally recorded by the Gibbs' group the The Bee Gees on their 1976 album Children of the World, the track featuring Robin Gibb on lead with his falsetto evidenced on the outro. This makes "Love Me" a curio among latterday Bee Gees' tracks as from the mid-1970s Barry Gibb sang most of the group's leads. (Robin did get one full blown falsetto lead vocal a couple years later on the Spirits Having Flown album with the song "Living Together" and on parts of the chorus from his solo album "Walls Have Eyes" with the song "Remedy".)
Yvonne Elliman version
As recorded by Yvonne Elliman - who like the Bee Gees was on the roster of RSO Records - "Love Me" became an international hit in 1976-77: reaching #14 on the Billboard Hot 100, Elliman's version of "Love Me" was a Top Ten hit in the UK (#6), Ireland (#9), New Zealand (#3) and South Africa (#3) also achieving hit status in Australia (#15), Canada (#11) and the Netherlands (#16). The parent album for Elliman's version was also entitled Love Me.
Martine McCutcheon version
Martine McCutcheon remade "Love Me" for her 1999 debut album You Me & Us from which the track - serving as the BBC Children in Need single for 1999 - was issued as the third single. It was released as a double A-side single along with "Talking in Your Sleep" and peaked at number 6 in the United Kingdom. It was re-released on 22 November in the week building up to the Children in Need event.
McCutcheon performed the song at the Children in Need telethon on 26 November 1999. She was supported by 100 children between the age of eight and thirteen, who were selected through nationwide auditions. The successful children had the chance to spend a day in a recording studio with McCutcheon, before serving as backing singers for the song on live television.[1]
